What They Think I Do

Creating the meme was somewhat therapeutic. Being able to show my perception on what others think I do with my time and what I actually feel like, took a weight off of my shoulders. I identify as a full time student and employee. The first image of what my friends think I do exhibits a notebook, a pen, and a book as if someone is studying. I do look down and see these items in front of me on a regular basis, so in a way this is true. However, this is not what my daily life consists of and I feel as though schoolwork is a reason I use to excuse myself from activities with them.
The second image is of what my mom thinks I do and shows a cat napping. My mom lives with me and I feel as though every time she gets home and sees me I’m watching TV. She sees that I am a lot more relaxed than what I just vented to her about 30 minutes ago. She always catches me when I am taking a break from a project or work and I don’t get a lot of help from her in my daily life as far as keeping the house clean goes because I believe she feels that I have a lot more time on my hands than I let on.
The last image on the top row demonstrates what society thinks I do. As someone who is considered a millennial I do not think we are taken very seriously by society no matter what we do. I work full time and am in school full time and work very hard to get what I want. Millennials are seen as entitled and superficial and think that they should have things handed to them by society and this is not the case what so ever.
The next image on the bottom row shows two x-ray techs helping to position a patient for an x-ray. This is more something I hope that my boss thinks I do. I always try to help my coworkers and get the job in any way that I can. The superwoman represents what I think I do and the last image represents what I actually do. I try to do it all and most times risk my sanity and the sanity of those around me in doing so. These images are more a reminder to me that I don’t have to be perfect and I don’t have to do everything needed all at the same time. I make lists of what I need to accomplish each week and I stress out over all that needs to get done. I have a lot of anxiety about getting classwork done and making sure there is still time for me to relax and enjoy life. I have breakdowns and I pick myself back up and keep going.

  1. Hi Sinead, I think you made a good post because I do feel the same way too. Some people think all we do is stay on our phone and wait for things to be handed to us and that is not true. We work hard just like everyone else and at times we do get stressed, but we pull it together and get the job done.

  2. Hey Sinead! I can definitely relate to you! I am a full time student and a mom to a toddler and a soon to be mom of a baby boy! I definitely am constantly busy but I am always caught by my mom dozing off! I feel like she thinks I have a lot more time on my hands than I actually do. I love your depiction of what society thinks you do. It is absolutely perfect because society really does think that all young adults do is spend their time on social media. I, for one, barely even have time to check my Facebook daily and I don't even have any other type of social media page! I can also relate to being a "superwoman" and trying to do it all! I am a very driven person and once I set my mind to a goal, I will go through any and all lengths to accomplish that goal! Our last pictures about what we actually do are very similar in nature where mine is a woman pulling at her hair with sticky notes all around her. It just shows that we are driven and busy but we strive to keep our sanity through it all!
